1. General information
The main aim of this subject is to initiate the student in the achievement of level C2 through the following general objectives: to develop the student’s ability to communicate orally and in writing in English, to synthesize, transfer and exchange information and to work autonomously and collaboratively. This approach is aligned with SDGs 4 (Quality education), 5 (Gender equality), 10 (Reduction of inequalities), 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions) and 17 (Partnerships to achieve the objectives) of the Agenda United Nations 2030.
This subject goes beyond the C1 level, consolidated in the subject Lengua Inglesa V, starts students at the C2 level and represents an instrumental support to the Trabajo Fin de Grado (27841) from a linguistic point of view. To take this subject, it is advisable to have previously passed the subject Lengua Inglesa V, which is taught in the first semester of the 4th year of the Degree in English Studies.

3. Syllabus
1. English in films and audiovisual culture. Reading and listening to complex texts about cinema and audiovisual programmes. Thinking, talking and writing about films and audiovisual texts.
2. English in Poetry. Reading poetry in English. Listening to recited poetry both in audio and audiovisual forms. Interpreting poetic texts and producing short written texts about them.
3. English as a transnational language. English in a global world: how to understand, interpret and discuss cultural texts about the processes related to globalization.
4. Borderwork. How to understand, describe and discuss written, audio and visual texts in which English is at the centre of transborder mobilities, and borderland cultures.
4. Academic activities
1. Theory. Study and practice of the lexical, grammatical, discursive, sociolinguistic and strategic contents necessary to reinforce and consolidate comprehension and oral and written expression in English starting from a full C1 level and reaching a C2 initiation level.
2. Practice. Carrying out didactic activities oriented towards the development of the four English language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) through tasks that require individual and group work, all with reference to the C2 initiation level.
3. Supervised activities: individual and group tutorials, in which students will be provided with instrumental English language learning techniques, as well as advice and supervision in carrying out individual and group tasks.
4. Autonomous learning: Personal and autonomous study in which the student must use personal work techniques to develop language skills at the level of initiation to C2. The teaching staff will give instructions and guidance on self-learning techniques in individual tutorials.
5. Other autonomous activities: readings, viewing audiovisual material, participation in the virtual learning platform (Moodle/ADD).
5. Assessment system
FIRST CALL
Continuous assessment (100%):
To opt for this evaluation system, the student must attend class regularly and hand in and pass the following tasks on dates that will be indicated in advance:
- A maximum of three short essays whose themes will be specified in advance for a total of approximately 1000 words (30%)
- A video presentation on a previously agreed topic (15%) – third week of April
- Oral interview of the students in pairs with the teacher or teachers of the subject (15%)
- Reading and listening comprehension exercises (40%)
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
For the evaluation of the oral and written expression tests, the lexical-grammatical, sociolinguistic and strategic aspects will be taken into account in accordance with level C2 of the CEFR. It will also be necessary to demonstrate in these tests a good knowledge of the texts recommended by the teachers of the subject at the beginning of the course.
Final assessment (100%):
- Two essays in different registers of approximately 1000 words in total (30%)
- Oral presentation by the student to choose from a series of topics proposed by the teacher (15%)
- Oral interview of the students in pairs with the teacher or teachers of the subject (15%)
- Reading and listening comprehension exercises (40%).
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The same as for the continuous evaluation.
SECOND CALL
Global assessment test with the same characteristics as the one described above for the first call.
