1. General information
This module aims to further develop students' skills in analyzing English-language audiovisual texts and the social contexts to which they belong, developing the critical skills acquired in module 27806. Students will be provided analytical tools to study texts as a reflection of the cultural and historical specificity of the English-speaking world.
Minimum recommended English level to take this course: C1. Attendance and active participation in classes, as well as completion of assigned tasks, are highly recommended.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/), so the acquisition of learning outcomes in this course will contribute to the achievement of Goals 4, 5, 10, 16, and 17 to some extent.
2. Learning results
• The student identifies basic and specialized concepts, as well as the necessary tools for formal and ideological analysis of audiovisual texts, using appropriate terminology.
• Understands, identifies, analyzes, and interprets different formal aspects of English-language audiovisual texts at a specialized level.
• Develops, expresses, exchanges personal ideas about formal and ideological aspects of English audiovisual texts at a C1.1 level according to the CEFR.
• Takes an interpretive stance and conveys it verbally in English at a C1.1 level.
• Listens to, assimilates, and challenges peers' opinions on a specific aspect of the text.
• Writes academic essays in English on various formal and ideological aspects of audiovisual texts, adopting a coherent and specialized interpretive stance.
• Adopts a critical and reflective stance towards the proliferation of audiovisual media in the society they live in, recognizing the provisional nature of the interpretive work of critics and viewers.

Theoretical sessions: Presentation of formal aspects necessary for interpreting audiovisual texts.
Practical sessions: Individual and group work, film commentary and debates, analysis and guided supervision of selected film excerpts.
Individual and/or group tutorials: Individual guidance and participatory group dynamics. Guidance on academic essay writing and revision of the essays submitted.
Viewing and analysis of mandatory audiovisual texts and completion of the corresponding essays and assignments.
Individual study and work: Reading/viewing of mandatory bibliography or audiovisual materials.
Theoretical-practical assessment tests.
5. Assessment system
FIRST CALL
Continuous/coursework assessment (100%)
Depending on the number of students per group, a continuous assessment system may be proposed for those students who attend classes regularly. This system will include:
a) Four written essays (600 words) (60%).
b) Tests on compulsory readings (30%).
c) Class participation (10%).
Final exam (100%)
• Part 1: questions on compulsory readings (30%)
• Part 2: short academic essay on one of the compulsory texts, to be approached from a specific analytical concept (800-1,000 words) (70%).
SECOND CALL
Final exam (100%) of the same characteristics described above.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR ALL TASKS/EXAMS
The following aspects will be assessed:
1. Ability to analyze and understand the narrative, cultural and historical dimension of English-language texts.
2. Argumentative ability, organization, and clarity of exposition.
3. Proficiency in formal academic English at C1 level.
4. In the case of the essays, maturity and originality of the argument.
