1. General information
This module aims to introduce students to the analysis of audiovisual texts in English and the socio-cultural contexts they are inscribed in, developing their critical thinking abilities. Students will be provided with basic analytical tools to explore these texts as a reflection the cultural and historical specificity of English-speaking countries.
Minimum recommended English level to take this course: B2.2.
2. Learning results
• The student identifies basic concepts, as well as the necessary tools for formal and ideological analysis of audiovisual texts, using appropriate terminology.
• Understands, identifies, analyzes, and interprets different formal aspects of English-language audiovisual texts.
• Develops, expresses, exchanges personal ideas about formal and ideological aspects of English audiovisual texts at a B2.2 level according to the CEFR.
• Takes an interpretive stance and conveys it verbally in English at a B2.2 level.
• Listens to, assimilates, and challenges peers' opinions on a specific aspect of the text.
• Writes academic essays in English on various formal and ideological aspects of audiovisual texts, adopting a coherent and specialized interpretive stance.
• Adopts a critical and reflective stance towards the proliferation of audiovisual media in the society they live in, recognizing the provisional nature of the interpretive work of critics and viewers.

Theoretical sessions: Introduction to the formal aspects necessary for the interpretation of texts.
Practical classes: Analysis and guided supervision of fragments from a selection of films
that will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
Supervised activities: Individual and/or group tutorials: Guidance on academic essay writing and review of completed essays.
Autonomous activities:
a) Essay writing: Viewing and analysis of mandatory audiovisual texts and writing of the corresponding essays and assignments.
b) Individual study and work: Reading/viewing of mandatory bibliography or audiovisual materials.
Assessment: Theoretical-practical written exam.
5. Assessment system
First official examination session
The module will be assessed through a global exam consisting of an individual written exam that includes:
• Part 1: Questions about the mandatory readings (30%)
• Part 2: A short academic essay on one of the mandatory films, responding to a specific analytical concept (800-1,000 words) (70%).
Depending on variables such as the number of students per group, a continuous assessment system will be proposed for those students who attend classes regularly. This system will include:
a) Three written essays (600 words) during the semester (60%).
b) Video essay on formal aspects of audiovisual texts (30%).
c) Participation in the debates or other oral activities in the classroom (10%).
Second official examination session
A global exam of the same characteristics described above.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR ALL PARTS/TASKS
The following aspects will be assessed:
- Ability to analyze and understand the specific formal aspects of audiovisual texts in English.
- Argumentative ability, organization, and clarity of exposition.
- In the case of the essays, maturity and originality of the argument.
- Proficiency in English at a B2.2 level.
Assessment criteria for the essays:
- Analytical and comprehension skills regarding the specific formal aspects of audiovisual texts.
- Argumentative, organizational, and expository clarity skills.
- Maturity and originality of the argument (formal, academic register).
