1. General information
The general objective of this course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge of the essential lexical-grammatical notions for the in-depth study of the English language.
This objective is aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/):

The course is part of subject matter 05, Grammar of the English language, which continues in "English Grammar II", in the 2nd year, and is completed with the optional subject "Pragmatics of Communication".
2. Learning results

Delve into a topic that involves different logics, knowing how to limit the direct extrapolation of concepts, methodologies, and information in which we have been trained.
3. Syllabus
[Introduction] What's grammar? National varieties. Standard and non-standard English. Register. Grammars of English.
[1] Grammatical units. Introduction to morphemes, words, phrases, and clauses.
[2] The structure of words. Inflection. Word formation processes.
[3] Introduction to word classes: Lexical words; function words; inserts; special classes of words.
[4] Lexical word classes: nouns; main verbs; adjectives; adverbs.
[5] Function word classes: determiners, pronouns, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, adverbial particles, conjunctions.
[6] Phrases. Types, structure and function.
[7] Clauses. Major clause elements: S, V, O, P, A. Major clause patterns: intransitive, monotransitive, copular, ditransitive, complex transitive. Simple, compound, and complex sentences.
4. Academic activities
The course is oriented towards learning the basic grammatical units. The theoretical activities are based on explanations of grammatical concepts and their practical application. The directed activities are focused on the analysis of texts, with the description and identification of grammatical units. Individual and group tutorials are conceived as advice and problem solving. Autonomous activities include individualized study and reflection in the application of concepts and in the lexical-grammatical analysis of texts, as a learning process required both for the global test and for the elaboration of the individual assignment.
5. Assessment system
FIRST CALL
Global assessment (100%)
1) A written theoretical-practical test in English in which the student will have to identify and analyse lexical-grammatical aspects in a series of texts.
This test will last no longer than 2 hours and 30 minutes, and will be graded from 0 to 10 points. It will represent 80% of the student's final grade in this subject.
2) An individual written assignment in English of a theoretical-practical nature. In this assignment the student will apply the knowledge derived from the theory program to the resolution of a series of practical exercises.
This assignment will be graded from 0 to 10 and will represent 20% of the student's final grade in this subject. To count the grade for the assignment, you must pass the exam, obtaining at least 50% of your grade.
SECOND CALL (100%)
Identical to the global test [1) written test, y 2) individual assessment] of the first call.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Aspects to be assessed:
a) Understanding and identification of basic grammatical concepts.
b) Knowledge of the subject matter.
c) Correct use of a theoretical framework and an adequate and well-defined methodology for the grammatical analysis of texts.
d) Adequate written expression in English.
