1. General information

The objective of the subject is to learn about basic astronomical measurements, the phenomenology of stars and galactic astronomy . The student will become familiar with the different types of astronomical coordinate systems, with the apparent distribution of stars and their large-scale motion, with the basic equations for describing stellar interiors and the properties of stellar matter, with the interstellar medium, and with the different types of galaxies.

2. Learning results

To know the distribution of stellar populations and the movement of stars both in the solar neighbourhood and on a galactic scale
To understand stellar evolution.
To know the distribution of the different components of the interstellar medium and to understand their physics. To understand the dynamics of our galaxy.
To know the different types of galaxies.
To be able to draw the conclusions derived from basic observational data.
The student will be able to distinguish conclusions derived from observational data from their model-dependent interpretations

3. Syllabus

Topic 1: Positions, movement and distance to stars.
Topic 2: Structure and kinematics of the stellar system.
Topic 3: Astronomical photometry.
Unit 4: Stellar structure and evolution.
Topic 5: The Sun and the solar system.
Topic 6: The interstellar medium.
Topic 7: Components of the Milky Way.
Topic 8: Normal galaxies and active galaxies.

4. Academic activities

Lectures: sessions where the teacher will explain the topics mentioned in the syllabus. 30 hours.
Problem solving and case studies: problem solving sessions and proposed case studies: 15 hours.
Special practices: field practices in which astronomical observations will be carried out: 5 hours.
Personal study. 70 hours.
Assessment tests. 5 hours.

5. Assessment system

Activity 1: It represents 30% of the final grade.

Continuous evaluation through the resolution of problems and questions throughout the teaching period of the subject which will deal with the different contents.

Also, students will be able to propose works that complement the topics covered in the subject. It will be carried out in groups. It can be submitted in writing to during the teaching period. It will be evaluated according to its completeness and correctness.

Activity 2: It represents 70% of the final grade of the subject.

Performance of a written test in which students will solve problems of stellar structure and interstellar medium. It will be carried out after the delivery of these chapters of the subject.

Students can pass 100% of the subject through activities 1 and 2. All students, however, have the option of passing the subject by means of a single global test. The evaluation will be obtained by means of an examination test consisting of problems that will deal with the different contents of the subject.

1. Información básica de la asignatura

El objetivo de la asignatura es conocer las medidas astronómicas básicas, la fenomenología de las estrellas y la astronomía galáctica. El alumno se familiarizará con los diferentes tipos de sistemas de coordenadas astronómicos, con la distribución aparente de estrellas y su movimiento a gran escala, con las ecuaciones básicas para describir los interiores estelares y las propiedades de la materia estelar, con el medio interestelar, y con los diferentes tipos de galaxias.

2. Resultados de aprendizaje

Conocer la distribución de las poblaciones estelares y el movimiento de estrellas tanto en la vecindad solar como a escala galáctica.
Comprender la evolución estelar.
Conocer la distribución de los diferentes componentes del medio interestelar y comprender su física. Comprender la dinámica de nuestra galaxia.
Conocer los diferentes tipos de galaxias.
Que el alumno, a partir de datos observacionales básicos, sea capaz de extraer las conclusiones que se derivan de ellos.
Que el alumno sea capaz de distinguir las conclusiones derivadas de datos observacionales de sus interpretaciones
dependientes de modelos.

3. Programa de la asignatura

Tema 1: Posiciones, movimiento y distancia a estrellas.
Tema 2: Estructura y cinemática del sistema estelar.
Tema 3: Fotometría astronómica.
Tema 4: Estructura estelar y evolución.
Tema 5: El Sol y el sistema solar.
Tema 6: El medio interestelar.
Tema 7: Componentes de la Vía Láctea.
Tema 8: Galaxias normales y galaxias activas.

4. Actividades académicas

Clases magistrales: sesiones en las que el profesor explicará el temario de la asignatura: 30 horas.
Resolución de problemas y casos: sesiones de resolución de problemas y casos prácticos propuestos: 15 horas.
Prácticas especiales: prácticas de campo en las que se llevarán a cabo observaciones astronómicas: 5 horas.
Estudio personal: 70 horas.
Pruebas de evaluación: 5 horas.

5. Sistema de evaluación

Actividad 1: Representa un 30% de la nota final.

Evaluación continua mediante resolución de problemas y cuestiones a lo largo del periodo de impartición de la asignatura y que versarán sobre sus diferentes contenidos.

También se podrán plantear trabajos que complementen los temas tratados en la asignatura. Se llevará a cabo en grupo. Se podrá entregar por escrito a lo largo del periodo de impartición de la asignatura. Se evaluará de acuerdo con su completitud y corrección.

Actividad 2: Representa un 70% de la nota final de la asignatura.

Realización de una prueba escrita en la que los alumnos resolverán problemas de estructura estelar y de medio interestelar. Se llevará a cabo tras la impartición de estos capítulos de la asignatura.

Los alumnos pueden superar el 100% de la asignatura a través de las actividades 1 y 2. Todos los alumnos, sin embargo,
tienen la opción de superar la asignatura mediante una prueba global única. La evaluación se obtendrá mediante una
prueba de examen que constará de problemas que versarán sobre los diferentes contenidos de la asignatura.
