1. General information
The purpose of this subject is to help students acquire the essential linguistic skills for the use of the English language in the scientific field, specifically in the practice of medicine. The aim is for them to acquire basic tools and strategies in English to organize, interpret and communicate medical information in real contexts and scenarios. To do so, students will have to work and express themselves in English (written and oral), and face all kinds of real situations: presentations of practical cases to other colleagues, patient examinations, preparation of clinical histories, etc. . These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), especially with Goal 3: Health and wellness.
The syllabus is in the phase of extinction. During the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26, this subject has no teaching, it will be governed by the guide published in the academic year 2023-24 (old plan) except for the evaluation system (see point 5 of this guide).
2. Learning results
RA-1. Develop linguistic skills and abilities to understand and interpret in English all types of texts related to Medicine.
RA-2. Expand vocabulary specific to the discipline, both technical and semi-technical.
RA-3. Promote the expression (in writing and orally) of ideas, opinions, agreements and disagreements, both in formal situations, in professional and academic contexts, and in informal and colloquial contexts.
RA-4. Learn to write the different types of texts used to communicate in the field of Medicine.
RA-5. Improve the student's oral expression to communicate effectively in an academic and professional environment.

1. Introduction: The medical studies and the medical profession
2. The Human Body: Overview of the structure and function of the human body / From molecules to organ systems.
3. Health and Illness: Classification of diseases /Adjectives and verbs related to disease /Signs and symptoms/Describing Pain.
4. The Hospital and Primary Care: Hospital staff/Hospital services and departments /Patient journey through the hospital: admission and discharge /Primary care providers and services offered in primary care settings.
5. Handling Medication: Basic medication vocabulary/ Understanding prescriptions: generic vs brand names /Discussing medical side effects.
4. Academic activities
1. Theoretical-practical classes with presentations and individual and group activities of practical exercises, study of cases and dramatizations that encourage participation, analysis and reflection around central themes of the subject: presentation of complaints; work in general practice; instructions and procedures; explaining and reassuring; medication management ; or lifestyle.

5. Assessment system
Global Examination in Scientific English for Medicine
A global written test in which students must demonstrate knowledge of: comprehension and writing skills in medical English, knowledge of specific vocabulary, definition and use of medical terminology in English, translation of expressions and/or texts of their speciality. Through various exercises such as: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, definitions, translation, etc.
The grade will be out of 10, with a pass mark of 5.
