1. General information
The general objective is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and relevant work strategies to understand the
historical factors that have determined the origin, formation and historical trajectory of Aragonese, as well as the situation of
linguistic plurality existing in Aragon. It is also intended that students will be able to characterize the language of ancient
Aragonese texts and identify the most outstanding features of the current Aragonese varieties.
An advanced instrumental command of Spanish is required. It is necessary for non-native students to have at least a B2 level of Spanish.
2. Learning results
1. To know the relationship between the history of Aragonese and the social, political and cultural history of Aragon, in the
peninsular context.
2. To know the phonic, grammatical and lexical characteristics that identify historical Aragonese in the context of the peninsular Romance.
3. To know the peculiar phonic, grammatical and lexical characteristics of the different current Aragonese geolinguistic varieties.
4. To be able to recognize in the texts the characteristic features of the medieval Aragonese Romance and of the different
current Aragonese languages.
3. Syllabus
-Bibliography. Sources for the study of Aragonese.
-Historical evolution: origins, diffusion of Aragonese romance. The process of Castilianization.
-Linguistic characterization, with attention to its formation and internal evolution.
-The linguistic plurality of present-day Aragon: High Aragonese speech, Eastern speech, Aragonese Spanish. Linguistic and
sociolinguistic issues.
4. Academic activities
The learning process combines expository and participative methodologies, which are specified in the following activities:
-Participative lectures.
-Practical classes, of great importance in this subject to reinforce the acquired knowledge and the participation and critical
reflection of the students. Among the practical activities are the philological commentary of medieval Aragonese texts and the linguistic commentary of modern texts, representative of the High Aragonese speeches.
-Tutorials for advice and help with any aspect of the subject.
-Personal study, readings, completion of practical exercises, preparation of an individual paper and preparation for the exam.
5. Assessment system
First call
Global assessment (100% of the grade).
a) It shall consist of:
1. A written test to demonstrate the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired throughout the term (70% of the grade).
2. Explanation of an academic work focused on Aragonese language selected by the teaching staff and settled at the beginning of the academic course (30% of the grade).
b) In all cases, the formal presentation, the degree of accuracy, clarity and correctness of the exposition, the coherent
organization and the appropriate use of linguistic terminology will be valued
A minimum of 4 on the written test is required for it to average with other grades.
Second call
Global assessment (100% of the grade).
It shall consist of a written test to demonstrate the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired throughout the term (100% of the grade).
5.1. Academic fraud prevention
The use of unauthorised electronic materials or devices during the assessment may result in immediate exclusion from the examination and a fail mark (a numerical mark of ‘0’ for the assessment).
Furthermore, the lecturer in charge may complete the grade report and submit it to the General Inspectorate of Services, so that it may, where appropriate, consider initiating disciplinary proceedings against the student for academic fraud.
In the case of a continuous assessment exam [continuous assessment cannot continue, unless otherwise specified in the academic guide.]
In the case of a regular or extraordinary exam session, the initiation of disciplinary proceedings will result in the grade ‘pending resolution’ until the proceedings are concluded.
