1. General information
Statistics in Biotechnology is an instrumental subject where the more theoretical aspects use mathematical language. This subject is a useful basic tool for those subjects of the fundamental and advanced blocks where the student must collect, present or analyse experimental data or data from direct observation of biotechnological processes.
Its objectives are to learn the basic techniques of Descriptive Statistics, Probability Calculus and Statistical Inference that are useful for the analysis of biotechnological processes.
2. Learning results
Be able to summarise and describe the information available through graphs, tables and statistics.
Being able to apply the calculation of probabilities and random variables in simple real situations.
Being able to apply basic statistical inference techniques and interpret the results of statistical analysis according to the proposed objectives.
Be able to use a statistical package as a tool both to describe data sets and to apply basic inference techniques.
Understand and know how to explain the conclusions of a scientific article or technical report in the field of biotechnology where a statistical analysis of a similar type to those seen in the subject is carried out.
3. Syllabus
1. Introduction to statistics and fundamental concepts.
2. Exploratory data analysis: frequency tables and univariate graphical representations. Measures of a frequency distribution. Double-entry tables. Graphical representations of two variables. Correlation coefficient. Simple linear regression.
3. Basic concepts of Probability and most common discrete and continuous random variables. Independent random variables and central limit theorem.
4. Statistical inference: Point and interval estimation. Hypothesis testing (parametric and non-parametric).
Software: R with Rcommander, http://knuth.uca.es/R/doku.php?id=instalacion_de_r_y_rcmdr:r-uca.
4. Academic activities
- Participative lectures in a large group where the basic knowledge of Statistics is acquired (3 ECTS).
- Practical sessions with computers in small groups for case-based learning (3 ECTS).
- Proposal of problems and questionnaires for individual work.
- Tutorials (small groups or individualised)
- Use of virtual learning platforms: moodle.
5. Assessment system
The student will be assessed globally on the dates of the official exam dates that will be published on moodle and on the notice boards of the degree in Biotechnology.
The test will consist of the resolution of theoretical-practical and practical questions based on a case study using the statistical programme R commander.
In addition, throughout the term there will be challenges and self-assessment questionnaires in which the student can participate voluntarily.
In order to obtain the final mark for the course, the grade of these voluntary tests divided by 10 will be added to the overall test, provided that both are 5 points or more.
