1. General information
This subject provides an introduction to the theoretical knowledge necessary to describe and explain the grammatical mechanisms of Spanish. Attention is paid to the more strictly formal mechanisms, to the distinction between lexis and grammar and to the interaction between both of them. Fundamental grammatical notions, categories, sentence constituents and basic sentence structure are described and explained. Theoretical knowledge is presented and a specific model of explanation is introduced, with the objective that students learn about the usual ways of describing and explaining the syntax of Spanish and become capable of evaluating them and contributing with their own interpretations.
An advanced instrumental command of Spanish is required. Non-native students must have at least a B2 level of Spanish.
2. Learning results
- Understanding of the theoretical concepts used by linguistic schools to explain the most relevant syntactic phenomena in Spanish
- Recognition of the formal and semantic properties of the basic units of the syntactic component.
- Ability to reason or argue about grammatical issues related to basic Spanish constructions.
