1. General information
Complement to the subject of Medical Psychology and Psychiatry, the rest of the medical-surgical specialties of the degree and the practice of medicine.
It provides, from a theoretical and essentially practical point of view, the biopsychosocial approach to each patient, in a holistic vision of health and of the human being.
It stresses the importance of psychosocial aspects in the genesis, evolution and therapeutic approach of any type of disease, emphasizing the unity of body and mind.
Discussion of real cases of clinical care in which the psychosomatic component is fundamental.
These approaches are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Goal 3: Health and wellness; Goal 4: Quality Education; Goal 5: Gender Equality.
2. Learning results
The student, by passing this subject, should achieve the following results, expected in a general practitioner or in any medical-surgical specialty:
- To be able to assess the clinical, epidemiological and public health relevance of psychiatric disorders in medical-surgical (MSP) and general medicine (GPP) patients.
- To know how to maintain an appropriate patient-physician relationship, complete a medical record and explore MSPs and GPPs from a psychosomatic perspective.
- To be able to explain the fundamental psychiatric syndromes, the possible courses of illness and the diagnoses to which they are directed.
- To know the fundamental clinical data on mental disorders included in the International Classification of Mental Disorders (ICMD) ICD-10 of the WHO (World Health Organization) and in the DSM-5 of the APA (American Psychiatric Association) always from a psychosomatic perspective.
- To learn how to make and "reaffirm" a psychiatric diagnosis that allows treatment or referral to another specialist
- To know how to apply basic therapeutic schemes in MSP and GPP with psychiatric alterations, both in emergency situations and in daily clinical practice.
- To show, from a critical perspective, the principles of Psychosomatic Medicine that concern Psychiatry.
- To be able to describe the devices of a Psychosomatic Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry assistance network.
- To be able to plan a research project in MSP and GPP from a psychosomatic perspective.
3. Syllabus
1. Psychopathological syndromes in medical settings.
2. Psychopathological reactions in medical settings.
3. Cerebral bases of psychic and psychosomatic morbidity.
4. Psychosocial bases of psychic and psychosomatic morbidity.
5. Somatoform and psychosomatic presentation disorders.
6. Depression and anxiety in medical settings.
7. Psychiatry in medical and surgical patients I (Dermatology, Rheumatology, Infectious, Oncology).
8. Psychiatry in medical and surgical patients II (Neurology, Endocrinology).
9. Psychiatry in medical and surgical patients III (Cardiology, Pneumology, Gastrointestinal, Nephrology, Surgery).
10. Research in Psychosomatics and Liaison Psychiatry.
11. Ethical aspects in Psychosomatics. Assistance and models of care in Liaison Psychiatry.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical classes of approximately 50 minutes duration.
Commentary on a clinical case of actual health care for another 50 minutes.
Work in groups of 3 - 4 students, depending on the distribution of the classroom.
Shared discussion of clinical cases of high complexity and care implications.
Contribution of own clinical cases, from other specialties, to propose a psychosomatic approach.
Design of a content research project related to clinical and psychosomatic care.
24 hours total:
- 16 hours in theoretical-practical classes
- 6 hours in workshops (discussion of clinical cases)
- 2 hours in research seminar
5. Assessment system
Practical evaluation:
During each class, a clinical case will be presented that can be worked on individually or in groups. Subsequently, we will develop a presentation of the case offering alternatives that include:
- Account of the main symptoms.
- Psychosomatic component of the story.
- Illness behaviour: cognition (information), affective reaction and behaviour.
- Diagnostic suspicion.
- Biopsychosocial therapeutic approach.
Evaluation of classroom practices (groups, discussion of clinical cases, active interventions) - 20%
Written theoretical examination:
- Development of a topic of the subject - 20%
- 5 "short" answer questions - 20%
- Development of a clinical case - 40%
