1. General information
The subject aims to provide the student with effective strategies and tools for the search of bibliographic information and for the production of research papers and their oral and written presentation.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with some of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, of the 2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/) and certain specific targets, so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to the student to contribute to some extent to their achievement:
Goal 4: Ensure Inclusive, Equitable, and Quality Education and Promote Lifelong Learning Opportunities for All Objectives 4.3, 4.4 and 4.7.
Goal 9: Build Resilient Infrastructure, Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization, and Foster Innovation. Objective 9.5.
Goal 17: Revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development. Objective 17.7.
2. Learning results
- To know the different means and forms to present research results.
- To know the characteristics and procedures of scientific writing.
- To know the techniques for the written presentation of scientific papers, as well as how to structure them and how to apply scientific writing.
- To know how to use these techniques to prepare quality written presentations in order to present research papers: articles, books, dissemination papers, executive reports.
- To be able to use the available resources to perform bibliographic searches: institutional repositories, databases, bibliographic sources,...
- To know how to use bibliographic reference management programs: Mendeley.
- To know how to use advanced scientific text editing tools: LaTeX.
- To know the types of oral presentations, techniques and strategies for their production.
- To know oral communication and negotiation techniques to be successful in the oral presentation of scientific results.
3. Syllabus
Unit 1. Tools for the production of scientific texts
Lesson 1. Types of written work: articles, books, dissemination writings, executive reports, slides, posters.
Lesson 2. Characteristics of scientific writing.
Lesson 3. Bibliographic references: search engines, databases and reference managers. Identifiers such as DOI. New editorial tools. Open Journal Systems (OJS). Access to repositories and tools from the Unizar library. Open access publication.
Lesson 4. Tools for scientific writing: LaTeX.
Unit 2. Written presentations
Lesson 5. Final Project: master final project (MFP), doctoral thesis.
Lesson 6. Scientific journals: bibliometric data, templates, letter to the editor, highlights, article structure.
Lesson 7. Poster for congress: adaptation to the target audience, structure, design.
Lesson 8. Technical reports: executive reports.
Unit 3. Oral presentations
Lesson 9. Final project presentation.
Lesson 10. Oral communication in congresses and scientific meetings.
Lesson 11. Introduction to negotiation.
4. Academic activities
In order for students to achieve the learning results described above and acquire the competencies designed for this subject, the following training activities are proposed:
A01. Master class (16 hours): presentation of the fundamental contents of the subject by the teaching staff or external experts.
A02. Problem solving and case studies (35 hours): methodology and problem solving.
A03. Practical sessions (9 hours).
A06. Teaching assignments (26.5 hours).
A07. Study (60 hours).
A08. Assessment tests (3.5 hours)
The hours indicated are only illustrative and will be adjusted depending on the academic calendar. The final schedule will be announced at the beginning of the school year.
5. Assessment system
The student must demonstrate achievement of the intended learning results through the following assessment activities:
Application of the communication strategies and tools explained in class to practical cases (activities type 2-3) that will be proposed and solved in class, as well as to one or several assignments that will be presented in class (activities type 6).
The final grade will be calculated by weighting the grades of the assignments and the practical cases solved in class according to the weights shown in option 1 of the following table. Students who do not perform, present or pass these activities (grade < 5) or who would like to improve their grade will be evaluated through option 2.

An overall grade equal to or higher than 5 is required to pass the subject.
In assessment option, 1 it is necessary to obtain a minimum grade higher than 4 in both the work and practical sessions in order to average. This option is only allowed in the ordinary call for evaluation (first call).
In the extraordinary call, the evaluation procedure is the one indicated in option 2.
