1. General information
Objectives of the subject
Diagnose, plan and perform basic treatments of oral and dental pathology in patients.
The Resolution of February 14, 2008, of the Secretary of State for Universities and Research, establishes the conditions to which the curricula leading to the degree of Dentist must be adapted. The following modules are planned to be included in the new curriculum :
Module 1. Basic biomedical sciences relevant to dentistry;
Module 2. Introduction to Dentistry; Materials and Instrumentation; Community Dentistry and Public Health; Initiation to Research and Communication Skills;
Module 3. General medical-surgical pathology and therapeutics;
Module 4. Pathology, therapeutics and dental rehabilitation;
Module 5. Practicum and Final Degree Project.
To take this subject it is necessary to have previously passed all the subjects of semesters I to VIII of the degree in Dentistry
These approaches are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda Specifically, the planned learning activities will contribute to the achievement of Goal 3, Health and Well-Being ( https://www.um.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
- Identify symptoms reported by patients of all ages, as well as special patients.
- Adequately describe the signs and symptoms to establish a differential diagnosis and a presumptive diagnosis, as well as a treatment plan.
- Distinguish all those situations that due to their complexity cannot be treated by the student and know how to refer them to the corresponding specialist.
- Plan a work session in the dental office and solve the diagnosed pathology in a sequential and integrated way.
- Establish the sequence of therapeutics in case multidisciplinary treatment is required.
- Develop a portfolio of all the clinical activity carried out during their training.
- Write a comprehensive documentary report (diagnosis, treatment plan and treatment) of a clinical case performed during the training period.
3. Syllabus
The program offered to the student to help them achieve the expected results includes the following activities.
The subject does not have its own contents, since it is about acquiring clinical experience of the competences and contents previously acquired in the topics of Module 4

4. Academic activities
The designed learning process is based on:
- Clinical practical classes: will be held at the Dental Practice Service of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sports of the University of Zaragoza (Dental Clinic)
- Practical work: we will also seek to reinforce learning through group or individual work, within a reciprocal teaching methodology . The student must present a portfolio produced during the realization of the different dental treatments performed, including the search and bibliographic review. Attendance to practices and the presentation of the portfolio will be mandatory.
- Personalized tutorials: on-site and off-site (via telematics), dedicated to resolve doubts or provide specific bibliography.
5. Assessment system
The student must demonstrate that they have achieved the expected learning results by means of the following assessment activities.
In general, in accordance with Royal Decree 1125/2003, the evaluation will be carried out continuously throughout the entire term. The evaluation will be carried out through:
-Assessment of the practical skills developed in the clinical practices, during the diagnosis, planning and subsequent implementation of the treatment plan, as well as the attitude and participation in all training activities (70% of the final grade in this section)
-Completion of a portfolio (30% of the final grade in this section) that should reflect the activities carried out by the student in the practices, including personal contributions, which should be documented with all the information they deem appropriate (descriptive summary of the clinical practices carried out and, where appropriate, of the literature reviews that support the complex treatments carried out in specific cases), of the cases treated in the Dental Practice Service of the University of Zaragoza in the last year of undergraduate studies (5th year).
The numerical grade will be expressed in accordance with the provisions of art. 5.2 of Royal Decree 1125/2003 of September 5, 2003 (BOE September 18, 2003), which establishes the European credit system and the grading system for official university degrees valid throughout the national territory.
Thus, the ratings will be established in the following range. From 0 to 4.9 fail (S): from 5.0 to 6.9 pass (A); from 7.0 to 8.9 notable (N); from 9.0 to 10 outstanding (SB). The “Honours” may be awarded to students who have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.0.
