1. General information
This subject aims to introduce students to the study of the history of cinema and other audiovisual media, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century, including their production, the cinematographic language, the authors and movements in the historical-cultural context in which they arose
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of United Nations (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement, specifically, with the following Goals 4: Quality Education; 5. Gender Equality. 10 Reduction of inequalities; 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions; 17: Alliances to Achieve Objectives.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
-Is able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the keys to the understanding and appreciation of Spanish cinema, its specific terminology, as well as the most important technical advances and artistic creation processes that have conditioned it throughout history, between the 19th and 21st centuries (referred to CE3).
-Is able to demonstrate a critical knowledge of the history of Spanish cinema, that is to say, a knowledge of its bibliographical sources, characteristics, functions and meanings, and of its main lines and causes of evolution in the course of time and in the framework of the diverse cultural changes in Spain between the 19th and 21st centuries (referred to CE4).
-Is able to demonstrate a knowledge of the main styles, movements and cinematographic tendencies, artists and fundamental works in each of the periods of the history of Spanish cinema (referred to CE5)
-Is capable of observing, analysing, describing and contextualizing any Spanish filmic work, as well as the most outstanding Spanish filmic exponents, within the evolutionary framework of Spanish politics, society and culture (referred to CE6).
-Is capable of interpreting Spanish film production and its most relevant cinematographic works by considering their aesthetic values, reflecting on their form, function and meaning, and studying their relationship with the historical, cultural, social, economic, political, ideological, religious and individual context in which they were created (referred to CE8).
-Is able to make a critique and self-criticism of Spanish film work (referred to CG2).
-Is able to identify, pose and solve problems and elaborate and defend arguments on the history of Spanish cinema (referred to CG7).
-Is able to search, gather, organize, interpret and disseminate data related to the history of Spanish cinema between the 19th and 21st centuries, in order to make judgments that include a reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues (referred to CG8).
-Is able to convey orally and in writing information, ideas, problems and solutions on this subject to both specialized and non-specialized audiences (referred to CG9)
-Is able to acquire the necessary learning skills to undertake further studies in this field of film history with a high degree of autonomy (CG11)
3. Syllabus
Topic 1. Pre-cinematographic shows in Spain (the case of Zaragoza) and the origins of cinema in Spain up to 1910.
Topic 2. The height of Barcelona production in the 1910s.
Topic 3. The development of the film industry in Madrid in the 1920s.
Topic 4. The 1930s: the transition to sound and cinema in Spain during the Second Republic.
Topic 5. Spanish cinema during the Civil War and its use as a propaganda mechanism.
Topic 6. The forties: Spanish cinema during the autarchy.
Topic 7. The 1950s: continuity and renewal.
Topic 8. The openness of the sixties: José María García Escudero, the New Spanish Cinema, the Cultural Transition and other film formulas.
Topic 9. The seventies and eighties. The Transition and democratic renewal.
Topic 10. New filmmakers since the 1990s. Final balance of the 20th century.
Topic 11. New models in the Spanish cinema of the 21st century.
4. Academic activities
The program offered to the student to help them achieve the expected results includes the following activities:
1) Theoretical classes: oral presentations by the teachers of the theoretical contents of the subject in the classroom (lectures).
2) Practical classes: Analysis, commentary and interpretation of the main exponents of the History of Spanish cinema, through the projection of complete works or fragments of these and discussion in the classroom.
3) Personal study and work, complemented with the recommended bibliography.
4) Tutorials.
5) Assessment tests.
5. Assessment system
First call
Global assessment (to be carried out on the date established in the academic calendar), which constitutes 100 % of the final grade, and which consists of the following activities: 1
- Practice report (20%): identification and cataloguing of a fragment of a film not seen in the classroom, but proposed within the list of films to be seen for this subject. Time: 30 m.
- Individual work (20%): written work (15 or 20 pp.) as a result of readings and reflections on the subject agreed with the teacher
- Written exam (60%): consists of two parts, one theoretical, one topic based on a statement. Time: 2 h.; practical part, commentary and analysis of several images or texts related to the History of Cinema, 30 m. In order to pass the subject, it is required to achieve a grade of 5 in the exam.
The assessment criteria are: degree of knowledge of the subject; organization and reasoning in the explanation, capacity for analysis and synthesis; adequate use of artistic terminology; presentation and formal correctness
