1. General information
The objective is to approach the history of the twentieth century in Spain from a critical and comparative perspective, emphasizing the tension between the democratizing projects of society and the State and the resistance to them throughout crucial stages such as liberalism, the Second Republic, the Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).

2. Learning results
Identify the most important events in the history of Spain in the twentieth century, as well as establish relationships between the political, cultural and economic levels of its society
Critically read historiographic texts about Spain in the 20th century, considering that the historical debate and research about it are in permanent construction
Use the bibliographic, archival, computer and technical tools that allow access to the study of contemporary Spain in the twentieth century.
Have the ability to critically integrate Spain's past historical processes with its recent history, both in historiographical trends and in the most important debates of our current society.
Organize complex information about the history of Spain in the 20th century in a coherent way and interpret it in a reasoned way.
The student understands the basic knowledge of the history of contemporary Spain in the 20th century, as well as the specific knowledge coming from the vanguard of this field.
Analyse in a critical, synthetic and comprehensive way the historical processes of the 20th century and their causes related to the history of contemporary Spain.
3. Syllabus
Topic 1: From the crisis of the Restoration system to the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1898-1931). Crisis of liberalism in the mass society.
Topic 2: The Second Republic (1931-1936): building democracy in interwar Spain.
Topic 3: The Civil War (1936-1939).
Topic 4: Franco's Dictatorship (1939-1975).
Topic 5: Political transition and construction of a democratic society.
4. Academic activities
1.- Theoretical classes in which the teacher will present the main aspects of each topic, also taking into account the different historiographical approaches
2.- Active participation in the practical classes in which texts, sources and materials related to the theoretical classes will be discussed
3.- Reading, preparation and presentation by the students of the materials proposed by the teacher on the most significant aspects of each topic
4.- Preparation of a voluntary work (individual or team) supervised by the teacher, with the aim to introduce students to research-oriented tasks.
5. Assessment system
- Continuous assessment system (in the case of an enrolment of no more than 25 students):
Test 1. Written and/or oral exam (50%).
Test 2. Individual written work (30%).
Test 3. Classroom presentation (20%).
Assessment criteria: quality of the oral and written presentation, the level of critical reflection and reasoned argumentation, the use of references, formal correctness in writing and adequate use of footnotes
Global assessment test
A) The global assessment test will consist of a final exam on the totality of the subject that will represent 100% of the grade
It will have three distinct parts:
1) A broad topic (50%).
2) A developmental question on bibliographic and/or archival materials (30%).
3) Short questions in coherence with what is required in the continuous assessment system for test 3 (20%).
Assessment criteria: ability to elaborate a topic, precision of knowledge in the short questions, ability to relate and critique events, processes and historiographical debates in the development question and clarity and correctness of the presentation.
