1. General information
The objective of the subject is to provide a basic knowledge of Latin language and literature through grammatical knowledge and translation of original texts at an elementary level, while emphasizing its relationship to Spanish language and literature.
The approach of the subject is aligned with the following SDGs of the United Nations 2030 Agenda:

Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Goal 17: Alliances to achieve objectives.
The subject is part of the Basic Training Module of the degree in Classical Studies. It is a continuation in the first subject of Rome, its language and literature I, with which it forms the subject "Classical language (Latin)".
It is recommended to have passed Rome, its language and literature I as well as class attendance and continuous and autonomous work.
2. Learning results
1. Ability to apply grammatical, literary and cultural knowledge to the comprehensive understanding of elementary Latin texts.
2. Ability to identify the fundamental grammatical elements of the Latin language.
3. Acquisition of basic Latin vocabulary and relating it to the Spanish language.
4. Ability to literarily evaluate the texts under study in their most important characteristics and style.
5. Skill in the use of bibliographic instruments for consultation in different media, as well as information and knowledge technologies.
3. Syllabus
3.1 THEORETICAL PROGRAM
a) Latin language:
1. Main stages in the history of the Latin language.
2. Introduction to the evolution of Latin into Spanish.
3. Latin grammar: morphology and introduction to Latin sentence syntax.
B) LATIN LITERATURE:
1. Introduction to Latin literature.
2. Genres and stages of Latin literature.
3. Authors and most representative works.
3.2 PRACTICAL PROGRAM: Translation and commentary of an anthology of elementary level texts.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical activities consist basically in the development in class of the corresponding programs of Latin language and literature.
As for the practical activities, they will consist, first of all, in the translation and linguistic analysis of Latin texts of elementary level, with special attention to the acquisition of vocabulary. Secondly, we will exercise the commentary of terms in the evolution from Latin to Spanish. Finally, the practical activity will be completed with the commentary of representative literary texts and, if the teacher in charge considers it appropriate, with the reading of a Latin literary work.
5. Assessment system
First Call:
a) Continuous assessment system
In the event that there are less than 25 students enrolled, the teacher in charge may opt for this evaluation system.
1. Written test on the theoretical program of Latin literature
Characteristics: Questions on the Latin literature program. If the teacher deems it appropriate, they may include questions about the reading (10% of the final grade).
Weighting: 30% including, if applicable, the reading control.
2. Written test on the theoretical program of the Latin language
Characteristics: Questions and/or exercises on the Latin language program.
Weighting: 30%
3. Written test on Latin texts.
Characteristics: Translation and morphosyntactic analysis of Latin texts
Criteria (tests 1 and 2): Knowledge and understanding of the concepts; clarity, expository order and terminological rigor; presentation and spelling will be valued. Criteria (test 3): Regarding the Latin text, its understanding and linguistic interpretation will be assessed. In the translation, fidelity to the original text, coherence with the grammatical analysis and correctness and quality of expression in Spanish will be valued. Weighting: 40%
In order to be eligible for averaging, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 4 out of 10 on each test.
b) Global evaluation test (Date set in the academic calendar of the Faculty).
It will be similar in tests, weighting and criteria to the Continuous Assessment.
2nd convocation (Date set in the academic calendar of the Faculty).
Overall evaluation identical to that of the first call.
