1. General information
The subject aims to provide the student with the necessary strategies for the understanding and interpretation of archaic and vulgar Latin texts. It also involves progress in the application to Latin texts of methods of linguistic reconstruction in diachronic terms.
The subject is aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030:

The subject is taught in the final year of the Classical Studies degree. It involves an in-depth analysis and understanding of texts of special complexity due to their distance from the standard module of the classical language.
It is advisable to have passed the subjects Latin Language and Literature II: Comedy and Indo-European Linguistics I.
2. Learning results
1. Knowledge of the major stages of the Latin language, from its establishment in Italy to its spread throughout the empire.
2. Ability to perceive the linguistic levels (literary, familiar, vulgar) in significant
texts.
3. Ability to perceive the major changes in the Latin linguistic system, contrasting them with those of Romance languages.
3. Syllabus
1. Latin as an Indo-European language.
2. General characteristics of Archaic Latin. Archaic inscriptions and texts.
3. The configuration of Latin as a literary language.
4. General characteristics of Vulgar Latin. Anthology of Vulgar Latin texts.
4. Academic activities
Presentation of the theoretical topics and their subsequent application in practice on a selection of Latin texts representative of the history of the language:
a) Translation and commentary on a selection of epigraphic and literary texts from the Archaic period.
b) Translation and commentary on a selection of epigraphic and literary texts from Vulgar Latin.
c) Translation and commentary on other Latin texts of interest for the study of the History of the Latin Language.
5. Assessment system
First call
Continuous Assessment System (Its application will depend on the criteria of the teacher in charge of the subject):
1. Theoretical and practical test on Archaic Latin (50%).
Criteria: in the theoretical part, the learning of knowledge, terminological and conceptual rigour, the ability to relate to other Indo-European languages will be assessed. In the practical part, the understanding of texts and the application of theoretical knowledge in their commentary will be assessed.
2. Theoretical and practical test on Vulgar Latin (50%).
Criteria: in the theoretical part, the learning of knowledge, terminological and conceptual rigour, and the ability to relate to other Romance languages will be assessed. In the practical part, accuracy in the understanding of texts and the application of theoretical knowledge in their commentary will be assessed.
In each of the two tests, the student must have achieved a minimum mark of four in order to be eligible for an average.
Global test.
It will be similar in terms of tests, weighting and criteria to the Continuous Assessment.
Second call
Global assessment with the same characteristics as in the first call.
