1. General information
The subject offers an introduction to Roman literature, from its origins to the Late Antique period, based on the study of authors, works and genres. This diachronic perspective, mainly oriented towards the commentary of texts, is complemented by reference to the rhetorical bases of ancient literature, to the main current theories of literary analysis and, eventually, to phenomena of survival.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda ( https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/):

2. Learning results
1. Knowledge of the major stages of Latin literature and of the establishment and development of their genres.
2. Ability to situate within its genre and cultural environment any of the major works and authors of classical Latin literature.
3. Sufficient knowledge of the literary motifs, forms and topics that have survived in the European literature.
4. Knowledge of new perspectives in the study of Latin literature.
3. Syllabus
1. Introduction to Latin literature and its methods of study.
2. Archaic literature.
3. Late Republican literature.
4. Augustan literature.
5. High-imperial literature.
6. Late Antique literature.
4. Academic activities
A theoretical syllabus is combined with its practical application in the literary commentary of Latin texts.
The learning activities will consist of the development of the theoretical program, the analysis of selected Latin texts and the reading of Latin literary works of special relevance.
During the first classes, the readings to be done will be agreed upon.
5. Assessment system
First Call:
Continuous assessment
- Test 1: WRITTEN TEST ON THE THEORETICAL PROGRAM (50%).
- Test 2: Work of literary commentary of a Latin text (30%). Short in length and on a topic chosen by each student at the beginning of the class must be presented in writing, after a synthesis of its contents has been presented in the classroom.
- Test 3: Written test on the required readings (20%). Students will be asked about aspects of content and form.
In all the sections, the quality of the information provided, the clarity of the exposition, and the correct spelling will be valued.
Global assessment
