1. General information
The subject Introduction to Arabic Literature will allow the student to be introduced to the cultural production of a civilization that has played an important role in the history of Europe and, in particular, in the history of Spain. The main objective of this subject is to offer a basic training on the literary manifestations of the Arab-Islamic civilization and its evolution throughout history, also providing the necessary bibliographical and methodological tools to deepen the subject in an autonomous way.
These approaches are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda: quality education; gender equality; and reducing inequalities.
2. Learning results
To pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following results:
- Know the main literary manifestations made in Arabic language (referred to CE4).
- Read and comment on literary texts (referred to CE12).
- Learn to manage specialized bibliography (referred to CG8).
- Broaden knowledge of Arab-Islamic societies (referred to CG23).
3. Syllabus
1. Pre-Islamic literature: the Mu'allaqat
2. Early Islamic literature: The Qur'an and panegyric poetry
2. Umayyad literature: love poetry
3. Abbasid literature: the adab, the maqama, modernist and neoclassical poetry
4. Literature of al-Andalus: the prose of the caliphate, taifa poetry and strophic poetry
5. Literature of the Ottoman era 6. Nahda and contemporary Arabic literature
4. Academic activities
The learning process designed for this subject is based on the following:
-Theoretical exposition by the teacher of the main literary trends and manifestations produced in the Arabic language throughout history.
-Practice of commentaries of literary texts that show the evolution of this production, with active participation of the student.
5. Assessment system
First call:
a) Continuous assessment system
It will consist of two tests,
Test 1. Oral presentation of a commentary on an Arabic literary work (20% of the grade).
Test 2. Written test on the theoretical contents of the program (70%).
Both tests are mandatory. In addition, the regular and active participation of the students in the programmed learning activities and the delivery of the requested material in relation to them will compute 10% in the final grade. In test 2 a minimum grade of 5 will be required for averaging.
b) Global assessment test (on the date established in the academic calendar)
It will consist of three tests,
Test 1. Commentary of a literary fragment (10%).
Test 2. Commentary on an Arabic literary work assigned at the beginning of the term (20%).
Test 3. Written test on the theoretical contents of the program (70%).
All three tests are mandatory. In test 3 a minimum grade of 5 will be required to average with the other two tests.
Second call:
Global assessment test It will have the same tests and evaluation criteria as the first call.
General evaluation criteria: the understanding and assimilation of contents will be assessed, as well as the capacity for synthesis and transfer of knowledge.
