1. General information
The subject of Economics applied to Social Work aims to familiarise students with economic reasoning and provide them with a set of basic knowledge that will enable them to identify, understand and assess the economic dimension of different situations related to their future professional activity, broadening their understanding of social structures and processes, social change and human behaviour. The acquiring a useful tool for making informed decisions about the needs, circumstances, risks, preferred options and resources of individuals, families, groups and organisations.
These approaches and goals are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in particular the learning activities contribute to the achievement of Goal 1, Goal 5, Goal 8, Goal 10 and Goal 16.
2. Learning results
The profound socio-economic changes that are taking place, both locally and globally, as well as the economic policy actions that are being implemented in response to these changes, require that professions such as Social Work, have the necessary tools to enable them to better understand these changes and adapt to the new realities. Thus, to the traditional fields of intervention of Social Work (health, social services, etc.), already endowed with a clear economic dimension, new fields have been added (mediation, cooperation to development, etc.) in which the economic dimension has a prominent relevance. Therefore, improving and expanding the knowledge that these professionals have of economic processes, as well as familiarizing them with the habits of economic reasoning is a fundamental task for future social workers to be able to perform their professional tasks competently.
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results...
-To list, define and differentiate the basic concepts of economics (economic activity and markets, growth and sustainable economic sustainable economic development, inflation, unemployment, labour market, social and economic inequality, social exclusion, poverty, welfare state, fiscal system, economic policy, etc...)
-Identify and examine concrete situations that can be interpreted in economic terms (especially those that have an impact on the social structures and processes of the social work profession), synthesising their main components.
-Classify, analyse and use economic instruments in making decisions affecting individuals or social groups, examining their needs and available resources.
-Assess and analyse the economic dimension of public sector intervention, as well as recognise and assess the effects of public actions in the economic sphere on the social and institutional context in which individuals live -Discover, classify and synthesise the economic concepts contained in texts and technical reports and produce works in which economic concepts and arguments are developed in a clear and precise manner .
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
-Develop arguments to justify and criticize economic actions in an interdisciplinary decision-making context interdisciplinary character
-Indicate and organize the economic aspects that have an impact on the social structures and processes of the social work profession.
-Elaborate action proposals, explaining and assessing their economic implications.
3. Syllabus
Unit 1.- THE ECONOMY: Concept of Economics. Methodological process in Economics and The different branches of economic science.
Unit 2.- FUNDAMENTALS OF MICROECONOMICS: Demand, supply, prices and The different market structures
Unit 3.- THE ECONOMIC CONDUCT OF THE STATE: The economic functions and failures of the State
Unit 4- Growth and economic development: Concept and Indicators
Unit 5.- REDISTRIBUTION OF INCOME: Economic inequality and income distribution indicators. The fiscal policy
Unit 6.- UNEMPLOYMENT: Indicators and economic effects. Labour market policies
Unit 7.- INFLATION: Indicators and economic effects. Monetary policy
4. Academic activities
The academic-teaching activities of Type 1 theory will consist of expository classes, where the theoretical foundations of the subject will be presented and worked on.
Type 2 practical activities may consist of: exchanges of ideas, debates, opinions, problem solving, case studies, lectures, comments on texts and/or news, individual and/or group work. On the other hand, the students will prepare in advance and autonomously some of the T2 activities to be performed, according to the time allotment assigned to Type 6 activities.
The scheduled training activities, in hours for students, are as follows:
Study: 60 hours
Assessment tests. 6 hours
Master class. 30 hours
Problem solving and case studies: 30 hours
Teaching assignments: 24 hours
5. Assessment system
The student must demonstrate that he/she has achieved the learning results foreseen in the different teaching activities through the following assessment activities:
An objective test to assess the basic and fundamental contents of the subject developed in the activity teaching of theoretical content T1. An objective test of development questions (open questions, multiple choice questions, etc.) to assess the teaching activity of practical content, corresponding to the formulation, analysis and discussion of problems or exercises, individual and/or group work set in relation to the contents of the subject programme developed in the teaching activity of T2 and T6.
Multiple-choice tests:
The relationship between successes, errors, and omissions to obtain the final grade in this type of tests will be specified by the teacher at the beginning of the teaching period.
Oral/written tests:
Mere attendance will not be assessed, nor the mere submission of assignments, but the degree of achievement will be assessed
The final grade will consist of the average of the grades obtained in each of the different teaching activities, according to the following weighting criteria:
60% Teaching activity Type 1
40% Type 2 and Type 6 teaching activity
In order to be able to make this average it will be mandatory to have reached in each of the teaching activities a minimum grade established by the teacher.
