1. General information
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and objectives:
a) To know the conforming facts of the Eastern philosophy of the Middle Ages in its multiple dimension of terms, concepts, problems and solutions confronted to the Greco-Latin tradition,
b) To interpret and understand the main texts by Muslim and Jewish philosophers c) To identify the driving elements of Eastern philosophical development.
d) To know the vocabulary and conceptual apparatus of Eastern philosophy.
e) To acquire and exercise analytical and critical skills in relation to the texts of Eastern philosophy.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) : 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16.
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results...
Know the circumstances of intellectual, social and scientific nature in which Muslim and Jewish philosophical reflection is developed.
Identify in Arab and Jewish philosophy the characteristic features of philosophical thought as opposed to religious and juridical discourse. To apply this knowledge to the cultural debates of the present.
3. Syllabus
I.1. Muslim and Jewish thought in relation to the Hellenic tradition, cultures in contact and enlightened alternatives.
Speculative theology(kalam) and pagan philosophy(falsafa) in the take-off of Muslim thought.
I. 2. Muslim rationalism and contemplative dissent.
I. 3. Arabic science: calculus, astronomy, geography, medicine, chemistry.
I.4. The secularization of Jewish philosophy.
II. Examination of the text of Ibn Tufayl, The self-taught philosopher.
4. Academic activities
The program offered to the student to help them achieve the expected results includes the following activities:
- Theoretical classes.
- Practical classes.
- Work and personal study.
- Assessment tests or activities
5. Assessment system
First call
a) Continuous assessment Completion of a monographic work directed by the teacher (100% grade). It must be on a topic to be chosen from the program.
1) the organization of ideas and arguments, 2) the writing and presentation according to academic rules, 3) the bibliographic support, 4) the originality of the treatment, and 5) the understanding of its timeliness will be taken into account
b) Final assessment: final test of global evaluation (100%): written exam on the contents of the syllabus on the official date
Criteria:
1. Clear expression of the subject matter, avoiding conceptual vagueness and syntactic disorder. Use of the standards of presentation of an essay.
2. Reference of the theoretical elements of the philosophical tradition related to the subject.
3. Ability to relate texts and knowledge from other disciplines (textual criticism, political history, epistemology and anthropology, etc.).
4. Use of sources and knowledge of classic and updated bibliography.
5. Criticism of topical interpretations of the subject matter.
