This subject offers the student the basic tools to enter into the use of ancient sources as a historiographic instrument at an elementary level. For this it is recommended, although by no means necessary, to possess certain rudiments in classical languages, although in the development of the subject situations in which their knowledge is necessary will not arise. The rest of the recommendations are those of the Master in Research and Advanced Studies in History: have knowledge of the general diachronic structure of historical processes, have knowledge of the main events and movements of each of the periods of History and master certain skills typical of the profession of historian, such as knowing how to handle quality specialized bibliography, knowing how to access documentary sources, critically interpreting all kinds of historical documents and having basic knowledge of the current historiographic and investigative scene.
2.1. Competences
By passing the subject, the student will be more competent to:
Integrate knowledge and to formulate judgments based on information that, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge (GC2).
Develop learning skills that allow you to continue studying in the field of advanced historical studies in a way that will have to be largely self-directed or autonomous (GC4).
Integrate proposals from other fields of knowledge into historical research (SC10).
2.2. Learning goals
The student, to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results:
Rigorously evaluate the various sources and historiographic documents, handle techniques and methods of advanced studies and research in History in a self-directed or autonomous way (GC4).

Define original research topics that contribute to interdisciplinary knowledge and historiographic debate (SC10).
2.3. Importance of learning goals
The course provides students with an instrumental introduction to the management of sources as a privileged tool for the knowledge of the historical past.
