4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class. 

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks:

  • Translation and commentary of latin comedy texts in the class.
  • Translation of a comedy of Terence outside the class.
  • Readings: one comedy of Plautus and another of Terence.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

Section I.I. Latin Morphology.

  1. Introduction to Latin morphology.
  2. Nominal morphology.
  3. Pronominal morphology.
  4. Verbal morphology.
  5. Word formation: derivation and composition.

Section I.II. Roman Comedy.

  1. Comedy: general aspects.
  2. Plautus and the heyday of palliata.
  3. Terence and the evolution of the palliata.
  4. Other comic genres: togatae fabulae, Atellanae fabulae, mime.
