5.1. Methodological overview

The learning process that is designed for this course is based on the following: The cities and the territory stretching around them are complex systems. The systemic perspective is therefore present in the approach to this course, including the study of each of the different elements of the system and their interrelationsOnly from that systemic vision can be raised either the analysis of the urbanized territory as its management, which includes not only the planning of urban land but also the management of urbanized and metropolitan areas.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks: 

  • Lectures on the theoretical aspects of the course.
  • Seminars: in several sessions, different analysis techniques on urbanization, and urban and metropolitan areas management will be presented. Students, individually or in groups, will apply the techniques learnt in class.
  • Cases study: examples of urban land use planning and management of urbanized and metropolitan areas will be presented.
  • Field work: visits to appreciate in situ urbanization processes, or examples of urbanization under management compared to others emerging without such measures.

Topic 1. Urban system in regional planning.
Topic 2. Urban space: analysis and management.
Topic 3. Urban and metropolitan areas management.
Topic 4. Urban land use planning.
