5.1. Methodological overview

The learning process designed for this course is based on the following principles:

a) To maintain an integrated perspective that favors the relationship with others subjects and courses of the Degree

b) To coordinate the learning activities –interactive clases, learning, practical exercices, tutorials, field trip, personally study- and these, in turn, with the issues addresed during the course.

c) To introduce way in which the discipline raises, answers or explains issues of great social, economic and environmental interest.

 

A wide range of teaching and learning activities is implemented, such as interactive lessons, practical exercises, individual or group activities, directed activities, field work and private study.

A high level of student participation will be required from all students throughout the course.

Extensive material will be available via the Moodle site of the course. This offers a variety of resources including a repository of the lecture notes used in class, a course syllabus as well as other forms of course-specific materials, including a discussion forum. 

5.2. Learning tasks

Lecture sessions:  28 hours

Practical activities: Interactive, individual or group activities, including case studies and problems based learning: 30 hours

Private study: 90 hours

Assessment: 2 hours

5.3. Syllabus

The lecture course will address the following main issues

 

BLOCK I ( "Introductory Issues")

1: Services and its economic and territorial importance

2: The sectoral and spatial variations of the services

3: The services in the territory. Approaches, principles and applications

 

BLOCK II ( "The location of services and infrastructure Principles.")

4: The location of services: Classical theories

5: The location of services: Contemporary theories

6: The spatial organization of transport and communication networks

7: The development of transport and communication networks

 

BLOCK III ( "The location of services and infrastructure Applications for the management of the territory")

8: The estimation of influence areas of trade and services

9: Location  decisions.  The search for the optimal location for services and infrastructures

10: Networks and accessibility analysis

5.4. Course planning and calendar

The course is divided into 3 parts or thematic blocks. The course units are delivered via weekly two-hour interactive lecture sessions, supported by two weekly one-hour seminars. Each thematic block develops for about four weeks. The written exam is carried out at the end of the first block.
