5.3. Syllabus

1. Concept of Prehistory. Analysis of the main theoretical proposals of this science from a conceptual and methodological point of view. Proposals from the 19^th century to the present. Divisions of the Prehistory.
2. Archaeological method, by means of which the Prehistorian looks for the essential information to reconstruct the ways of life, fabrication techniques and industries, artistic elements and funerary rites, social relationships and structure, etc, of these peoples, as well as posing hypothesis about prehistoric the landscape. Fieldwork (archaeological surveys and excavations), Laboratory (analysis and classification of materials) and Bureau (memorandums and specific studies). Dating systems in Prehistory.
3. Quaternary and Hominization process. Study of the ecosystem during the two phases of the Quaternary: Pleistocene and Holocene. Landscape in the Palaeolithic. Evolutionary process of the hominids: hominization, from the Pre-Australopitecines to the Modern Man. Peopling of the planet: from Africa to the other continents.
4. Typology in Prehistory. Study of raw materials, techniques of toolmaking and their typological evolution: only ancient Prehistory (Palaeolithic). Lithyic and Osseous technologies and typologies.
5. The European Palaeolithic. Analysis of the main Palaeolithic cultures of Western Europe from the classic point of view: the French Traditional School. Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic.
6. Palaeolithic Art as a plastic expression through which we envisage the mind of the Pleistocene human population: religious beliefs, vision of the surrounding nature and their concept of hereafter. Analysis of pictorial and sculptural techniques, rock art and portable engravings, cultural practices in sanctuaries and domestic rites.
