5.3. Syllabus
1. The origins of fiction prose. Don Juan Manuel’s literary production and his pride as a writer. El Conde Lucanor. Date of composition. General construction of the work. Models. The structure of the first part. Style and rhetorical techniques.
2. Court poetry from the 15th century. Provençal origins. Court poetry in Castilian: stages of creation and Cancioneros. The poetic material of Cancioneros: poetic analysis (amorous themes, resources, metric forms). The work of Santillana, Juan de Mena and Jorge Manrique. Satirical poetry.
3. The revaluation of traditional court poetry: villancicos and romances. Villancicos: hypothesis concerning their origins and their oral and written dissemination. Analysis of themes, symbols, metrics and style. The Romancero: hypothesis concerning its origins and its oral and written dissemination. Classification. Analysis of the narrative, symbols and style.
4. Prose from the 15th century. Chivalric novels: the origins. Amadís de Gaula as a model for the genre. Romantic fiction: characteristics of the genre. Diego de San Pedro and Cárcel de Amor. Printed dissemination. The allegorical space and the courtly universe. The characters. The death of Leriano.
5. The theatrical tradition in the 15th century. Celestina: authorship and editions. Fernando de Rojas. The tradition of the genre. Love and magic.
