5.1. Methodological overview

The learning process designed for this subject is based on the following activities:

 

1. Onsite activities for the whole and small groups

1.2 Seminars based on theoretical and clinical cases.

1.3 Practical based workshops for small groups.

2.  Off-site activities in which students are the main characters.

2.1 Clinical cases previously worked out by the students

2.2 Clnical cases reviewed and self-asessed after teacher comments.

5.2. Learning tasks

The program designed to achieve teaching goals is based on the following activities:

ONSITE ACTIVITIES:

1. Lectures.

2. Seminars on psychopathology and clinical cases.

3. Small group sessions on special topics (eg. Psychometric tests).

4. Tutorials.

 

OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES:  

1. Teoretical-practical assignments on clinical cases.

2. Student´s assignment on special agreed and supervised topic based on teoretical program.

TEORETICAL SCHEDULE

 

SECTION ONE. INTRODUCTION

FIRST LESSON.-Psychological Medicine. Teoretical background and its goals. Boundaries and relationship with other scientific areas. Methodologies.

 

SECTION TWO. PERSONALITY. THE MENTAL STATE EXAMINATION. DESCRIPTIVE PSYCHOPATHOLOGY.

SECOND LESSON.- Temperament, character and personality. Dynamic and structural aspects of personality.

THIRD LESSON. -Perception and its pathology.

 4 TH LESSON.- Memory functions and its psychopathology.

5TH LESSON.-The thinking process and its psychopathology.

6TH LESSON. -Intellectual performance and its psychopathology.

7TH LESSON.-Affects. Emotion and conflicto. Psychopathology of the affects.

8TH LESSON.- Instincts´ Psychology. Motivation. Psycopathology of the instinctive life.

9 TH LESSON. -Consciousness. Arousal systems, asleep and dreams. Psychopathology of the consciousness.

10TH LESSON.- Unconsciousness. Contents and dynamics. Psychoanalysis.

 

SECTION THREE. SOCIAL, WORK-BASED AND GROUP BASED PSYCHOLOGIES.

ELEVEN LESSON.- Social Psychology. Group Psychology: structure and dynamics. Types of groups. The mass. Intermental phenomena.

 

SECTION FOUR. DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY.

TWELVE LESSON: Child Psychology. Psychology of the first year infant. Mother and baby bonding relationship. Emotional deprivation states and its psychological consequences.   

 

13TH LESSON: Pre-school and school child psychology. The influence of social media on the child psychology. 

14TH LESSON: Adolescent psychology. Crisis and psychological adaptations.  

15 TH LESSON: Old age psychology. Psychological preparation to both retirement and become elderly.

 

SECTION FIVE. PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF MEDICAL PRACTICE. DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP.

16TH LESSON. - Psychological responses of the medically ill.

17TH LESSON.-The doctor and its influence on the therapeutic process. Health profesional attittudes towards the patient. The sick doctor. 

18TH LESSON.-Medical-doctor relationship. The difficult patient. Psychological care of the severe patient, hopeless/incurable and teminally ill. Transference and coutertrasnference. The medical and psychological interview.

19TH LESSON. –The psychological effects of the treatments. The placebo effect.

TWENTY LESSON.- Ilness models. The psychosomatic understanding of the ilness.  

 

 

FACULTY NOTE: Some lectures might be included as off-site activities.

PRACTICAL BASED WORKSHOPS

1. MEDICAL-DOCTOR RELATIONSHIP: THE CLINICAL INTERVIEW. FIRST PART: clinical case vignette small groups discussion.

2. MEDICAL-DOCTOR RELATIONSHIP: THE CLINICAL INTERVIEW. SECOND PART: Cinema fórum: DVD THE DOCTOR. Group discussion.

3. Psychological assessment procedures.

4. Psychological aspects of the sick child.

5. The psychosomatic patient.

6. Psychobiographical assessement of mentally ill: clinical cases discussions.

7. The dying patient.

8. Psychotherapies.

5.4. Course planning and calendar

Psychological Medicine holds 6 ECTS which is equal to 150 hours, 45% are onsite (67.5hours) and 55% are off-site (82.5 hours).

The onsite activities distribution is the following:

Lectures: 30.4 hours.

Seminars: 12.2 hours.

Tutorials: 3 hours.

Supervised work assignments: 6.1 hours.

Clinical case reviews: 9.1 hours.

Assessment activities: 6.8 hours.

Total of 67.5 hours.
